The North York Moors was designated as a
National Park 50 years ago - 1952 and the designation said the following:
"The North York Moors are selected on ther intrinsic merits as an
area of beautiful unspoilt country and a magnificent coast with a wealth
of architectural interest." The speciality of the NYMNP is that it not only contains the largest tract of heather moorland in England
but also a great variety of landscapes, woodland, forests, high coastal
cliffs, rivers and wetlands and the traditionally farmed dales with their
drystone walls. For more information please visit the North York Moors website.
We are situated in the Esk Valley, Yorkshire's only salmon river, about
8 miles from the coast at Whitby. We are in a quiet peaceful valley ideal
for walking, riding and I think cycling, although most visitors look at
the hills and argue. We are in easy reach of the coast, and historic cities
such as York are only an hours drive away.
The village pub is 3/4 of a mile away and serves meals all days (except Mondays in winter).
The village has a good butcher's shop, but for something special, it's worth taking a trip to Radford's Butchers and Delicatesson in Sleights, which is ten minutes away. It's a good idea to bring a cool box to stock up. The village shops
in both Glaisdale and Lealholm can see to all your needs so your cottage
could be stocked ready for your arrival. We are happy to arrange this if
you give us a week's notice. Whitby seafood is well known
as the eating places in and around the town are many and varied with the
upper end showing much improvement lately.
The National Park's website is well worth a visit as it can tell you
much more about this area than we can ever hope to do.
