The Old Sheaf Store and The Threshing Barn

Winners of Country Landowner and Business Association's Top Architectural Award for Farm Bldg Conversion 1999.

Featured in 'YOU' magazine as in top 25 holiday cottages in Great Britain 2000.

The Old Sheaf Store and The Threshing Barn have been converted to provide accommodation for self catering or extra Bed & Breakfast.

We have tried to maintain the 'feel' of a barn while adding all the luxuries of modern living, central heating (although we have also added a wood stove), dishwashers, microwaves, etc. We were pleased to feature on the opening pages of English Country Cottages 2009 brochure as well as being the July picture of their 1999 calendar and in 2008 being their main featured picture for Yorkshire and Northumbria.

The two cottages form part of a group of Grade II listed buildings dating from 1760 and we named them after their original usage. The conversions took place in 96 and 98 and both cottages were awarded the English Tourist Boards 5 Keys Highly Commended. To maintain the barn character we have painted walls rather than plastered, used old farm artefacts, polished and put rugs on old boards and when possible used period furniture.

The Old Sheaf Store
The Old Sheaf Store is in the newest section of the barn having been built around 1830. It has wonderful views along the dale to the south and west and into the Esk Valley to the east. To take advantage of these views, we have put the living area upstairs and the two double bedrooms on the ground floor. The living area is open plan with the kitchen, as well as full electric central heating (not nightstore) and it has an old fashioned woodstove.  pic6

Wood is supplied free of charge as is the first £20 of electricity, which is more than sufficient for most of the year - although if you don't use the woodstove in winter you could find yourself using another £10 or so of electricity.

The Threshing Barn
The Threshing Barn is in the older section of the barn, having been built around 1760. The ceilings are lower and more 'beamy' and its floorplan is more conventional with bedrooms upstairs.

Both cottages have their dedicated sitting areas as well as use of around 1½ acres of shared grounds which include a barbecue area and games room. The games room is more an adult than a child facility and we do ask that children be accompanied by an adult.

Both cottages have full electic central heating, wood stoves, fan heaters, colour TV and video, radio/cassette players, automatic washing machines/tumble dryers, microwave ovens, dishwashers, fridges and freezers. A mobile phone (pay as you talk & settle end of week) is provided and by arrangement we provide high chairs, stairgates and cots.
